Adventure games are great fun to play as the player gets to play the main character (well most of the time) in an interactive story which normally involves puzzle solving, exploration with the odd fight or battle thrown in for good measure. The actual phrase "Adventure Game" seems to have orginated from a game that was created in the 70's called Adventure in which the style of gameplay was more important than the actual story that was being told.

Adventure games today generally offer a wide variety of literary genres, including fantasy, mystery, horror, science fiction, and sometimes comedy. Nearly all adventure games are designed for a single player, since the heavy emphasis on story and character makes multi-player design difficult because these games require strong characters and plots, character development tends to follow personal and emotional growth, rather than the growth that affects actual gameplay.

Today, it is rare to see traditonal style adventure games offered however action-adventure style games combining elements of adventure games with action games becoming increasingly popular, with a particular interest shown in science fiction and more up to date story's. Computer role-playing games in this type have been published more frequently since the success of Baldur's Gate in 1998, and console role-playing games have generally been quite focused on plot and story, thanks in part to the success of the now widely known Final Fantasy series.
